Juan, better known as Buddha, is seemingly known all over the island.
He's fun, alternately serious and jocular, a devoted dad, and of pure Mayan
descent. He took time to joke with us, teach us Spanish and Mayan, and go
drinking with us. He's a deckhand on the Observer, one of the dive
boats. |

Raffi and I clowned around a bit under water. We took this picture ourselves. |

In fact, Raffi couldn't keep his hands off anything. Here he's poking at some
big angelfish. He 'petted' numerous groupers, eels, and even, briefly, a
barracuda. He's now known as the Grouper Groper. Better that than
Nine-Finger Raffi. |
